Expanded Overview: Working Hours & Overtime Compliance
Key Compliance Rules:
Standard Working Hours
Working-hour requirements in India depend on the applicable central labour framework, state rules and the type of establishment. Under the OSH&WC Code framework, the normal working limit is 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week.
Rest Breaks & Shift Structure
Working schedules should include appropriate rest intervals and be structured around the requirements that apply to the employee’s location and workplace. State-level Shops and Establishments rules may also affect shift length, spread-over periods and weekly rest arrangements.
Overtime
Where an eligible worker exceeds 8 hours in a day or 48 hours in a week, overtime is generally payable at twice the normal rate of wages under the OSH&WC Code framework.
UK-Hours & Late Shifts
Teams can be scheduled to create meaningful overlap with UK business hours, but late or night working arrangements must be structured around the applicable state and workplace requirements. Additional safeguards may apply to women working night shifts, including consent, transport and security arrangements depending on local rules.
How Higher Ground Supports You
Higher Ground manages the operational layer around working hours and shift compliance. We help structure UK-aligned schedules, maintain attendance and time records, administer overtime where applicable, and coordinate the practical requirements associated with late-shift working.
This allows your team to achieve strong UK–India working-hour overlap without leaving shift administration, employee support and local employment requirements to your internal team.
